Sally Lunn’s -Eating house & museum, Bath, UKIn 1680, Sally fled France to escape persecution by the Catholic Church, crossed the English Channel, and eventually found refuge here in England.She found work in a small bakery, where she first sold the baker’s breads before starting to make her own - a light, brioche-like loaf inspired by the flavours of her homeland. The locals loved it, and the now-famous Sally Lunn buns quickly became a Bath speciality.The house itself, built in 1482(!), is considered one of the oldest buildings in Bath. Today, the basement hosts a small museum where you can see the original oven in which Sally baked her buns.The recipe has survived, and the current menu offers a variety of dishes built around the bun -sweet versions with jam or butter, and savoury ones with bacon, roast chicken, beef, salmon, and more.The experience is definitely interesting-the house feels really ancient; as you climb the stairs you hear the wooden steps creak, and there’s that distinctive old-house smell.The “dining rooms” feel like old residential chambers, and the fireplaces (which are not in use) create a quiet, intimate atmosphere that is occasionally interrupted by the constant flow of tourists.As a part of the Bath experience, I’d say it’s worth a visit.
